Lawson decided to go commercial fishing in Alaska, influenced by the television program “Deadliest Catch” and by stories a friend had told him about fishing up north. Lawson later recalled that he was interested in “money and travel.” He bought an airplane ticket and flew to Kodiak, where he lived in a campground for several days. He put his name up on a bulletin board in a coffee shop, and he “walked the docks” four or five times a day looking for a berth on a boat. On the third day—7 June 2008—he was hired as a green crew member on the Zenith. He was told “to grab his bags and hop in the truck” to get to the boat. He picked up some supplies at a store and went. Lawson earned a $100 per day on his first trip, but more on his later ones.
